Holy Monastery of Aria

Holy Monastery of Aria

Agia Moni is located near the suburb of Aria, 3 km northeast of Nafplio. The katholikon of the monastery dates back to the middle of the 12th century and since 1875 is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi.

It is one of the most important temples of the mid-Byzantine period and is maintained in excellent condition.

According to its founding inscription, which is built into the outside, to the right of the main entrance, the church is sponsored by the bishop of Argos and Nafplio Leontas, who built it in 1149.

The church is mainly of architectural interest, as its original painted decoration is not preserved.

It has been built in the type of the complex four-column cruciform inscribed church with a dome and together with other temples of the 12th and 13th century of Argolida is a special unit within the Greek School of Architecture.
