We left Limeni with the best impressions. our next stop was Pyrgos Dyros and its beach we had heard good words. We parked for a while in the shops of Diros, we took a walk to see the ceramics that the shops have in abundance on the street. We decided to go down to the next beach where we would stay for one night. Large beach with white pebbles and at the end just opposite the caves of Diros blue waters.
Our next stop is Gerolimenas, about 20 km from Diros with a good road, Mani, full of olive trees and scattered on our right and left towers alone on the stone slopes. Really great live route. It was like driving on a plateau, on a plain in the mountains. Below us the sea and above us the mountains of Mani.
We arrived at Gerolimenas, otherwise known as the "Holy Port", one of the strongholds of Mani pirates. In Mesa Mani a very picturesque port, one of the largest commercial ports in the area in the past. Today's modern season one of the most important destinations for all travelers who will visit Mani. Before approaching the place we thought it would be cosmopolitan with so many visitors. And yet no, it turned out to be a quiet port with as many people as needed, a few hotels, very few taverns and cafes. It's not a spree it's a must have for any motorhome. It turned out to be perfectly accessible, comfortable and friendly for us.
About 50 km from Gythio and about 20 km from the lighthouse of Tainaros, the southernmost tip of Mani and mainland Greece. The tour in Mani cannot but pass through Gerolimenas. The only area for overnight and parking with absolute safety of the vehicle is in the village square. The parking spot is here
Next to 50 meters is the beach of Gerolimenas with thick pebbles but with crystal clear waters. The view is amazing. In the turquoise waters to enjoy your bath and around the stone-built traditional houses of Mani.
The women of Mani, dynamic, in black, outside the door of their house suddenly appear at dusk. Lost in the coolness of their home all day and night strong figures in the neighborhoods. We are in Mani in the middle of Mani a special area, with picturesque history, rich past wild place stone and sea and air. The whole surrounding area of Gerolimenas, the surrounding villages, full of olive groves, the last area you might find oil to buy. The best oil from dry olives.
We did not stay several days just needed to realize where we are, to have a complete picture of the area an image that will not be easily forgotten. After all, this is the happiness of traveling in a motorhome. You do not commit to anything, if you do not like it you leave. If you like it again, you enjoy it. That's what we did there. It was impossible not to enjoy one of the most beautiful ports of Mani and the Peloponnese. Fortunately, this destination is quite far and does not have enough visitors, otherwise… ..
However, we enjoyed our coffee every morning. !!!!!
Gerolimenas is not a big place, a breath of fresh air. It is worth the walk in the village is unique the feeling of walking among the old stone houses is a different feeling, authentic. There is a main street passing through the few shops, a small super market with the essentials, a cafe and one or two taverns with fresh and good fish. This is all the shopping center of Gerolimenas, but the visitor is not interested in its commercial traffic, it is interested in the wonderful images that the area takes
When you walk, sometimes you really feel like you are somewhere else, in another era, maybe in another country, not in this Greece that we all know. It is a unique region, a unique destination is a Greece that we all need to know, to taste. The stone, the soil and the sea all around make the visit remain indelibly engraved in the memory of the visitor.
A quality search of a corner of our country with a style of uniqueness and charm.
The heat was unbearable, all day and night, as if the stones were sucking all the heat of the sun and leaving it at night when the sun had set. And the further you go from Gerolimenas, the more wild and special the landscape becomes. Stone everywhere, the color of the sea blue and the rocks gray.
Definitely at some point in the future we will pass through these places again. Our trip to Mani was one of our best experiences in Greece in recent years. Many corners of our country are waiting to be discovered to get to know them, at the last end of this earth there are so many surprises. A place uniquely authentic, may it stay that way forever.
